A Place at Our Table: A Fundraising Lunch for Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees

 

On 21 February we were delighted to host a fundraising lunch for Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees, which raised over a thousand pounds. We were treated to delicious home-made foods from Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine, generously prepared by Bahar, Batoul and Natalia. 'Our' table is purposely ambiguous, to encompass the importance of sharing and exchanging food, stories and company. At this time of division, hatred and suspicion, community matters more than ever and all those who attended were both guests and hosts, contributing to the price of the meal but also making their presence into an act of fundraising and solidarity. New connections were forged and memories made. Thank you to all who participated and offered their time, support and presence. Especially to our wonderful chefs and their families,  to Rick (Davnall) for offering his time and music, to Homa and Tim from SWR, to Sue for creating beautiful place settings and decorations, to all those who helped wash up and set up. A special thanks to Fran, who came up with the idea, and worked indefatigably to make it happen.
